Your Support Can Make a Difference

The Museum’s latest oral history chapbook, “In the Terrace,” tells the story of Joan Cunning, who grew up in the tight-knit Irish community on Willow Terrace. It’s part of our “Vanishing Hoboken” series, produced in partnership with the Friends of the Hoboken Library.

Like Joan, each of us has a Hoboken story of our own. Whether your great grandparents moved here in the 19th century, or you’ve just moved into town, Hoboken has a way of marking you, and it’s produced more than its fair share of colorful characters. The Museum’s primary mission is to capture that character and ensure it lives on for future generations, through exhibits and talks, publications, festivals, and our archives.

After all, what’s more “Hoboken” than the Hoboken Historical Museum? Think of all the interesting stories we’ve brought to light: The great steamships, the making of “On the Waterfront,” the city’s role in World War I, its comeback in the ’70s, its musical contributions, and the many sweets made here.

It all started in 1986, with a few display cases at City Hall for exhibitions, a monthly newsletter and lectures at the Shannon and Clam Broth House. From these modest beginnings, the Museum grew steadily, acquiring artifacts, launching a quarterly history magazine, the oral history series, walking tours, and education programs. Ten years ago, we finally moved into a space of our own. Now, the Museum is open six days a week, and welcomes more than 12,500 visitors every year.

Looking ahead, we enjoy a diverse base of support, from our members, state grants, local businesses and community participation in our fundraising events. But times are still tight for any nonprofit these days, as the state has reduced its overall funding levels, and competition for grants from other sources is fierce.
