Happy Sesquicentennial Hoboken! The Hoboken Historical Museum invites every school, class, teacher and student to join us for the first of two exhibits exploring Hoboken’s 150 years. Multi-disciplinary programs introduce your students to the study of history through interactive, hands-on experiences with original artifacts. Students and educators engage in discussion and writing activities at the Museum, arts programs, and city walking tours as a way of exploring Hoboken and American history, immigration, industrialization, urban development and more. All programs are led by a museum educator and are adapted to the age, interests, and needs of your students. Programs are designed to meet New Jersey Core Curriculum standards.

MUSEUM LESSONS
Hoboken Hunts (pre-K-3rd grade)
1 hour/$50 per classWhat did the Mile Square City look like in the time of our great great grandparents? Who used to live in Hoboken? Did you know that coffee, tea and pencils were made here? Children use original resources to explore our city’s past.
Option: Add an art project (1-1/2 hours; $60 per class)
Hoboken History: The First 75 Years (4th-12th grade)
1 hour/$50 per classExplore the roots of Hoboken’s past—the range of immigrants that have settled here; the rustic landscapes; the famous inventors and artists born here; the manufacturers that have made Hoboken home. Students learn how to study original artifacts to investigate history. Analytic and writing projects included. Class can be tailored to focus on specific topics, such as immigration, geography and manufacturing; or a particular time period.
Hoboken History by Foot: Walking Tours (4th-12th grade)
1 hour/ $50 per class (available April-June)Discover Hoboken history through its old and new factories, apartments, churches, parks, monuments, and other special places. Available walking tours address thematic or geographic interests (uptown, midtown or downtown), and begin at the Museum or your school. Please specify your interests when making a reservation.
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES
Inside Out: Drama Workshops (3rd-6th grade)
Limited dates available: Tuesday, April 19 through Friday, April 22, 9 and 10 a.m.1 hour/$50 per workshopTake a stroll through historic Hoboken. Experience the images and artifacts of the Museum’s exhibit through the eyes of Hoboken residents past and present. Performing theater exercises inspired by the exhibit, students actively engage in the history of Hoboken. Whether sitting in the stands of the first game of baseball or picnicking in the late 1800s with the view of Manhattan, students glimpse pieces of history from the inside out.
David A. Miller of Mile Square Theatre returns to the Museum to lead these workshops. David is currently directing a production of Jungle Book at The New Acting Company in Greenwich Village and is the Artistic Director of CityKids Repertory Company in Manhattan.
Multiple Visits

Afternoon for Educators: Historic Walking Tour
Wednesday, April 20th, 3:30-5 p.m.Meet at the Museum for light refreshments, then join a walking tour of historic Hoboken just for educators. (In case of rain, we will tour the exhibit The City of Hoboken: The First 75 Years 1855-1930.) We will explore the architecture of changing Hoboken from the days of the Elysian Fields and the first game of baseball to the years of the Maxwell House factory and immigration. In addition, we will discuss ways to integrate architecture and the outdoor environment into your curriculum.
All teachers receive a resource packet including a large historic map of Hoboken suitable for the classroom, new city maps for each of your students, and lesson plans. This program is free, but please reserve a space at 201-656-2240, ext. 5, or education@hobokenmuseum.org.
