September 1, 1962. PATH assumed operating responsibility for the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad. 

September 11, 1856. On St. George's Cricket Ground in Hoboken, now Columbus Park, the Canadian Cricket team played the US team. The US team was victorious. 

September 15, 1776. The Hoboken Ferry, previously seized by Continental troops, was captured by the British.

September 16, 1968. John J. Grogan, mayor of Hoboken for 12 years, died suddenly. His funeral was one of the largest in Hoboken's history, with over 2,000 in attendance. 

September 18,1811: The world's first steam powered ferry, designed by Colonel John Stevens, took her maiden voyage between Vesey Street in Manhattan and Hoboken. To learn more about the contributions Colonel Stevens made to the development of steam ferries, click here.
