SUMMARY:Hoboken's Elysian Fields: The Rise and Demise of a Riverside Paradise with Irwin Chusid
DESCRIPTION:Hoboken’s Elysian Fields: The Rise and Demise of a Riverside Paradise \nOctober 25th 4pm at the Hoboken Historical Museum \nJournalist and historian Irwin Chusid\, an authority on early baseball\, will explore the history of Hoboken’s vanished 19th century waterfront pleasure garden\, the Elysian Fields. This iconic site is considered one of the birthplaces of baseball\, hosting some of the earliest recorded games. But it was also a vortex of entertainment\, recreation\, and public debauchery. Disneyland\, Central Park\, and Coney Island are all descended from the Elysian Fields. Chusid\, who has lectured on the topic at the National Baseball Hall of Fame\, will share his extensive research and insights into how Hoboken’s early growth helped shape America’s pastime\, and how the town evolved from an 18th century mosquito-infested swamp. \nIrwin Chusid is a journalist\, music historian\, record producer\, radio personality\, and self-described “landmark preservationist.” He oversees the music estates of Sun Ra and Raymond Scott. Since 1975 he has been a DJ on free-form radio station WFMU in Jersey City\, and has lived in Hoboken for 34 years. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Collage Workshop with Susan Olinsky
DESCRIPTION:Explore the possibilities of paper through collage. Cut\, layer\, combine\, and transform materials to create an original work of art. No experience necessary. \n📅 October 27th | 6:30–8:00 PM\n📍 Hoboken Historical Museum \nJoin us for an evening of hands-on creativity as we explore collage as a medium for self-expression. Walk away with your very own original work of art! \nWorkshop led by Susan Olinsky \nSUSAN OLINSKY is an artist and designer with over 25 years of experience working across fine art\, graphic design\, textiles\, and creative industries. SUMMARY:Camera Club Photographers of New Jersey: From Hoboken to Trenton A Free Lecture with Gary Saretzky
DESCRIPTION:Camera Club Photographers of New Jersey: From Hoboken to Trenton\nA Free Lecture with Gary Saretzky \nDate: Sunday\, November 1\nTime: 4:00 PM\nLocation: Hoboken Historical Museum\nAdmission: Free \nAs a companion program to the Hoboken Historical Museum’s Main Gallery exhibition\, What They Saw: Hoboken’s Amateur Photography Clubs\, 1889–1934\, join photography historian Gary Saretzky for an engaging look at the vibrant camera club movement that flourished across New Jersey at the turn of the twentieth century. \nThe lecture begins with an introduction to some of New Jersey’s earliest photography organizations\, including the Hoboken Camera Club\, Newark Camera Club\, and Plainfield Camera Club\, placing Hoboken’s amateur photographers within the broader statewide movement that helped shape photography as both an artistic pursuit and a popular pastime. \nThe program then turns to Grant Castner (1863–1935)\, a founding member of the Trenton Camera Club and one of New Jersey’s most accomplished amateur photographers. Through Castner’s striking photographs\, attendees will explore how camera club members documented landscapes\, waterways\, architecture\, and everyday life while advancing photography as a creative medium during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \nDrawing on decades of research into New Jersey’s photographic history\, Saretzky will also discuss the growth of amateur photography\, the role camera clubs played in fostering technical skill and artistic expression\, and how these organizations connected photographers throughout the state during the era explored in the Museum’s exhibition. He will also share perspectives from his own experience as a longtime member of the Princeton Camera Club\, offering a fascinating comparison between today’s photography clubs and their nineteenth-century predecessors. \nAbout the Speaker \nGary Saretzky is an archivist\, photographer\, educator\, and one of New Jersey’s foremost authorities on the history of photography. He served as Monmouth County Archivist for more than 25 years and previously taught photography and the history of photography at Mercer County Community College for 35 years. He has published more than 100 articles and reviews on photography and photographic history\, lectures regularly throughout New Jersey\, and continues his extensive research documenting nineteenth-century New Jersey photographers. \nAdmission is free. Unlike large-scale demolition and redevelopment\, Applied focused on rehabilitating existing buildings into affordable housing\, which helped stabilize the community. SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Pamela Reilly
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to celebrate the opening of Pamela Reilly’s exhibit in the Upper Gallery\, “A Sense of Place: Recent Paintings of Hoboken.” \nPamela’s acrylic paintings depict recognizable people and places\, usually in an urban setting. She paints with strong color and a clear rhythm. She walks around Hoboken without a predetermined route\, taking photographs to document what she sees\, paying particular attention to the time of day and the season. When an image takes hold – a striking sky\, perhaps – she uses those photos and my understanding of air\, space\, and color to start a painting. \nEdgar Degas wrote\, “Only when he no longer knows what he is doing does the painter do good things.” Each brushstroke reveals her process\, but the essential transformation at the heart of her painting practice happens beyond conscious thought. She is interested in the moment when intention gives way to discovery and a familiar subject becomes something new. \nThe body of work in ‘A Sense of Place: Recent Paintings of Hoboken’ marks a shift from her earlier exhibitions. Rhythm has become essential to unifying her paintings and detail takes a backseat to the overall feeling. She wants a person standing in front of the canvas to experience a story unfolding over time. \nHoboken-based artist Pamela Reilly draws on photography\, memory\, and personal experience to create vivid paintings of people and landscapes. After a period devoted to caring for her family\, Reilly returns to exhibition with a solo presentation at the Hoboken Historical Museum: ‘A Sense of Place: Recent Paintings of Hoboken.’ \nReilly studied art and art history at Smith College and the College of Fine Arts at Boston University. She continued her education at the Art Students League and the School of Visual Arts in New York. She also studied at the New York Feminist Art Institute\, where artist Faith Ringgold introduced her to the tradition of story quilts with their focus on community. Reilly apprenticed with sculptor Sidney Simon and worked with him at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture\, where guest lecturers included David Hockney and Louise Nevelson. More recently\, she has studied painting privately with artist Henry Finkelstein. \nReilly has had four solo exhibitions of figurative work at Ceres Gallery in New York. The Edith Barrett Art Gallery at Utica College presented a ten-year overview of her work\, Inner Circles\, and she was also a guest lecturer at the college. Her earlier oil pastels\, drawings\, quilts\, and photo transfers have been included in numerous group exhibitions\, including the prestigious Fiber National. \nReilly’s work continues to explore the relationship between observation\, memory\, and lived experience. She is currently developing a series of paintings and drawings inspired by the annual St. Ann’s procession\, extending her longstanding interest in people\, place\, and memory inspired by living in Hoboken

SUMMARY:Start Spreading the Haikus: Sinatra's "New York\, New York" and the Poetry of Baseball
