March 11, 2018 @ 12:00 am

As part of the Museum’s World War I Centennial Lecture Series, on Sunday, Mar. 18, at 4 pm, the Hoboken Museum is pleased to welcome historian Randal Gaulke, for an illustrated talk about “The Meuse-Argonne: Then and Now.” Gaulke has studied the battlefield intensively and led tours there. He has created a dedicated website based on his research and experiences there.

Explore Randal Gaulke’s fascinating website here.

The Meuse-Argonne Offensive was the largest independent American offensive against the Imperial German Army during the Great War. It began on Sept. 26, 1918, less than two weeks after the St. Mihiel Offensive ended.

By war’s end, the battle involved portions of 23 American divisions and 1.2 million U.S. troops (not counting French units); and it produced an estimated 110,000 thousand casualties, or more than 2,300 casualties per day. On the other side, the Imperial German Army fought tenaciously well into mid October; even as signs of defeat continued to accelerate.
